Mauritius is a beautiful island nation located in the Indian Ocean. From Delhi to Mauritius, journey was a little tiring as it was a 7 hours flight but once you land in Mauritius, all the discomfort looks just worth it. It is definitely a heaven for tourists , so beautiful that it leaves you awe-struck. And there is so much to do here that you will fall short of days, believe me. But I have listed the top 10 things that you should do here for sure. Have a look at it and try to cover as much as possible guys to avoid missing the best in this paradise.
1) Explore the beaches and waterfalls.
There are so many beautiful beaches in Mauritius to fall in love with. Of course this should be on your priority list when you are in this island nation. The most famous beaches to see in Mauritius are Flic and Flac beach, Ile aux Cerfs, Le Morne and Blue Bay. You will instantly fall in love with these white sand beaches overlooking the crystal clear turquoise waters. Infact you really get to see so many shades of blue here.
Mauritius also has a wealth of waterfalls that offer panoramic views. Do make it a point to visit at least one of them. The most famous ones are Tamarind Falls, Rochester Falls and Chamarel Falls. Of cascades, Trou deau Douche is remarkable.
2) Visit the beautiful tea estates here
This was one of my favourite things that I did in Mauritius. Those green and beautiful tea estates of Bois Cheri in Southern Mauritius will blow away your mind. The view is so addictive and rejuvenating that you won't feel like leaving this place at all once you halt here. You can visit a tea factory and see how the tea is made from the leaves. And don't forget to buy some Bois cheri tea varities too because they have some really aromatic flavours.
3) Go on Catamaran Cruises and explore the small islands
Mauritius has quite a few number of small islands that are gifted with natural beauty. The most famous ones are the Ile Aux Cerfs, Ilot Gabriel, Ile Aux Benitiers, Ile Aux Aigrettes and Ile de la Passe. Just go on a Catamaran cruise and explore them. A day long picnic on these islands are just perfect. It's your choice whether you just want to relax and lazy around on these islands or go for water activities. But one thing is sure you will definitely have beautiful memories with some stunning views of sand and water.
4) Indulge yourself in some water activities
Mauritius is a heaven for water sports lover. You name it and they have it all. Be it kayaking, water karting, windsurfing, kitesurfing, dolphin watching, parasailing, underwater walk, water skiing etc, there is so much to do here. Or you can go explore the underwater life in glass bottom boats, submarines, sub-scooter ride or by snorkelling. And if high power water activities don't excite you too much then fishing is also great option. Or you can even go on for a cruise and just relax and enjoy the lovely view of water all around.
5) Sega Dance
This is the folk dance of Mauritius which you should watch for sure. Sega dance was originally a dance of the slaves in Mauritius and later on became popular among all the classes of people. The beautiful Mauritian girls dancing and singing in Creole, the local Mauritian language will definitely uplift your mood. The energetic and lively dance moves will make you dance too. And their colorful and frilly costumes will give you bohemian dress goals. I loved everything about this dance, the rhythm, the moves , music and everything. Many good hotels and resorts in Mauritius organise the Sega dance and music nights in their restaurants. If you happen to stay in such a hotel then you are lucky, But if not, then you can book a table for dinner in one such restaurant and enjoy the vivacious dance of Mauritius. So anyhow you should make it a point to see the dance before you leave the island nation for your home.
6) Explore the nature and the wild in Mauritius
Mauritius is a tropical country abundant with tropical forests, lush green vegetation and wildlife. Organise a trip to any of the national parks and enjoy the beauty that nature has bestowed on Mauritius. Visit the Black River Gorges national park which is a home to many endangered plants and animals. Or you can visit Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens too see some endangered and exotic plants and the famous collection of the Queen Victoria water lillies. For the adventurous souls there are many hiking and treking opportunities in The Pouce and Black River Gorges National Park. Take a trip to the extinct volcanoes and the dormant volcano of Mauritus like Trou aux Cerfs.
7) Visit Chamarel the world famous attraction
The seven coloured Earths of Chamarel is not to be missed. Here you get to see seven different coloured earths swirled by a volcanic geographic phenomenon. This place is definitely awe-inspiring. Not only this site is unique but the route to it is also beautiful. You get to see the beautiful tropical forest and Chamarel waterfalls on way to the seven colored earth.
8) Self drive a rented car and explore Mauritius
Now this is something that I would recommend to everyone. Rent a car, take a map of Mauritius and self drive to explore the beautiful coastline of this heavenly island nation. Many hotels have a tie up with the car renting companies. All you have to do is talk to the company's representative in the Hotel and rent a car. If your hotel doesn't provide such facility then you can also rent a car from the outside agencies. By renting a car and driving it on your own, you can explore the beauty of Mauritius in a better way and you never know what beautiful beach or place you may stumble upon.
9)Explore the rich culture of Mauritius
Mauritius is one nation where you literally get to see people from so many ethnicities and cultures. Europeans, Africans, Indians and Chinese all live together here in harmony. People are so warm and friendly here that you will love this place. You get to hear so many languages here and so many religious structures like temples, mosques and churches and Chinese pagodas here. Some noteworthy places to see here are the Ganga Talao famous for a Hindu temple, beautiful churches of Port Louis and Chamarel etc
10) Walk through Port Louis to acquaint yourself with the historical heritage of Mauritius
Port Louis is the perfect place to witness the grandeur of the erstwhile colonial rule of Mauritius. And you get to see some really splendid structures like the Fort of Citadelle, Champ de Mars which is the second oldest racing course in the world, church of Marie Reine de la Paix, UNESCO world heritage site Aparvashi Ghat and French colonial buildings in Labourdonnais Avenue.
So these are my top 10 things that one must do in Mauritius. Hope you like them. Do let me know if you also have anything else worth doing here which I may have missed out during my trip to Mauritius. Ciao for now..!!
